Spain Defaults on State Bonds -   How the Fugger Fared in the Financial Crisis of 1557         Introduction   This Case-Study focuses on Spain’s state bankruptcy in 1557. It was the first in a series of state defaults and compulsory consolidations under the reign of Philippe the Prudent of Spain and his successors. The Fugger loans and the measures of the Spanish crown are historical facts. So are the direct quotations from the Fugger’s correspondence, which we render as translated by H. M. Lucas. 1   Both the Fugger and the other banks continued lending to the Spanish Crown.
